BACKGROUND

Veterans and service members are at 50% higher risk of suicide than their peers who haven’t served. Since 2001, 114,000+ veterans have died by suicide. Without change, by 2030, 60,000 more lives will be lost. The problem is clear: The systems in place aren’t working; the status quo is no longer acceptable.  


We’re not your typical nonprofit. We’re the only national, veteran-founded-and-led nonprofit focused solely on military suicide prevention. We use data insights, best-in-class technology, commercial marketing best practices and evidence-based services to find and serve veterans at acute risk for suicide. 


What started as three veterans answering a toll-free number in 2010 has grown into an innovative, agile, and data-driven tone-setter that’s leading change, building community and, most importantly, saving lives. Our vision is a nation where veterans and service members have no greater risk for suicide than any other American; our line in the sand is to reduce the military suicide rate by 40% by 2030, saving 2,400+ lives per year. We work tirelessly to make it a reality and we’re growing rapidly (doubling staff, doubling revenue YoY) to meet increased demand and opportunities to save more lives.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Stop Soldier Suicide (SSS) is looking for a tech savvy, detailed oriented Development Specialist who wants to go beyond “making a difference”. We want someone who steps up every day to fuel the life-saving work we do with American veterans and service members. 


Reporting to the Director of Donor Engagement, the Development Specialist serves as a critical support role to the success of revenue growth for SSS and will focus on supporting the growth and maintenance of the organization’s fundraising programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development Specialist shares our passion for saving the lives of veterans, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and will be entrusted with the following key responsibilities:

  • Works closely with development staff, donors, and volunteers to ensure accurate and timely gift recording and acknowledgments.
  • Responsible for entering, tracking, and reporting of all donor gifts in Salesforce database, in compliance with IRS regulations. 
  • Maintains data integrity of the system by creating best practices for Salesforce users and serves as system expert.
  • Maintains and reviews donor files in Salesforce database regularly; records and checks recent correspondence or meetings to assess constituents’ interests and nature of relationship with Stop Soldier Suicide; tracks and records fundraiser activity and metrics.
  • Provide project management support and scheduling for all grant proposals and report deadlines.
  • Tracks donor/prospect meetings in the database and updates records, along with other relevant correspondence or actions. 
  • Perform research of major donors, foundations, and corporate prospects using appropriate research tools.
  • Manage select partner and vendor relationships as well as third-party donation platforms, (Ex: GoodUnited, Benevity, AmazonSmile, etc.)
  • Support donor engagement, outreach, and other key functions in collaboration with the Director of Donor Engagement.
  • Complete other duties as assigned. 


QUALIFICATIONS

We’re looking for individuals who are committed to the mission, vision, and values of Stop Soldier Suicide. In addition, the Development Specialist should possess the following key attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience in development, nonprofit management, or project management.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, Hubspot, Blackbaud, or similar CRM/fundraising software, ideal. 
  • Keen attention to detail, follow-through, and initiative-taking with drive to deliver on individual and team goals.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and partners with a “get it done” mentality.
  • Motivated to work for a mission-driven organization that values initiative, teamwork, and drive to continuously perform and improve on behalf of our service members and veterans. 
  • Agile with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Military background/experience/connection preferred.


OBJECTIVES AND KEY RESULTS (OKRs)

This individual is responsible for meeting the following Objectives and Key Results during the first 90-180 days:

  • Maintain meticulous and timely tracking of data with the ability to quickly find and pull information on request
  • Familiarize self with the database management systems and make recommendations for continuous process improvement
  • Conduct research of historical data to help identify donor prospects
  • Serve as primary support for grant proposals, providing required information under tight deadlines

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The majority of the work required is performed in an office environment (a blend of virtual and office in light of COVID-19). The team member must be able to effectively maneuver within the office area and perform essential functions necessary to perform the job duties and meet the OKRs described above. 


SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
