BACKGROUND

Veterans and service members are at 50% higher risk of suicide than their peers who haven’t served. Since 2001, 114,000+ veterans have died by suicide. Without change, by 2030, 60,000 more lives will be lost. The problem is clear: The systems in place aren’t working; the status quo is no longer acceptable.  


We’re not your typical nonprofit. We’re the only national, veteran-founded-and-led nonprofit focused solely on military suicide prevention. We use data insights, best-in-class technology, commercial marketing best practices and evidence-based services to find and serve veterans at acute risk for suicide. 


What started as three veterans answering a toll-free number in 2010 has grown into an innovative, agile, and data-driven tone-setter that’s leading change, building community and, most importantly, saving lives. Our vision is a nation where veterans and service members have no greater risk for suicide than any other American; our line in the sand is to reduce the military suicide rate by 40% by 2030, saving 2,400+ lives per year. We work tirelessly to make it a reality and we’re growing rapidly (doubling staff, doubling revenue YoY) to meet increased demand and opportunities to save more lives.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Stop Soldier Suicide is looking for a Marketing Specialist who wants to go beyond “helping veterans”. We want someone who steps up every day to fuel the life-saving work we do with American veterans and service members.


To accomplish the mission, it’s vital that we have an exceptional team. Mediocrity isn’t an option. Our headquarters is located in North Carolina’s Research Triangle, but our focus is finding the right teammates to make our goal a reality. We’re open to remote work for candidates outside our geographic area, provided you are flexible in accommodating various time zone differences (EST or CST preferred). 


Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Marketing Specialist is responsible for internal and external execution of a multi-touch marketing effort built on a digital-first approach to lead generation for corporate/major gift accounts and recurring revenue via our monthly giving program, The Battalion. Successful candidates will model Stop Soldier Suicide’s True North competencies: Impact, Judgement, Innovation, Courage, Agility, and Inclusion.  


RESPONSIBILITIES

The Marketing Specialist shares our passion for saving the lives of veterans, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and will be entrusted with the following key responsibilities:

  • Serve as the marketing subject-matter-expert to help drive key revenue products, including The Battalion, corporate partnerships, and major gifts. 
  • Consult with product leaders to determine marketing tactics (including content marketing, lead generation, landing page design, email marketing, and the like) best suited to achieve revenue goals.
  • Create hypotheses, build tests, and measure results.
  • Work hands-on to execute marketing tactics such as copywriting, building email templates, building sales funnels, and creating sales enablement assets. 
  • Collaborate with Digital Advertising Manager and agencies on ad strategies, tactics and optimization
  • Collaborate with agencies to ensure on-point execution of established tasks, and own internal action items as needed to further agency performance.
  • Monitor performance of social, email, and ad content and make recommendations for optimization opportunities.
  • Contribute to SSS email marketing through copywriting, template design and database management.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and continued development of the SSS website through copywriting and CMS management.
  • Monitor marketing and fundraising trends, competitor presence and real-time content opportunities to optimize organizational visibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

We’re looking for individuals who are committed to the mission, vision, and values of Stop Soldier Suicide. In addition, the Marketing Specialist should possess the following key attributes: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field 
  • Have a minimum of two (2) years professional marketing experience, with a strong preference for a digital marketing background
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership, attention to detail, ability to multitask, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to communicate effectively both up and across the organization.
  • Knowledge of marketing/communications best practices and demonstrated ability to effectively engage with broad and diverse audiences.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to quickly adopt and master the established brand voice and tone.
  • Proficiency with CRM and CMS programs, including but not limited to Funraise, Salesforce, Pardot and Craft.
  • Mastery of the Google Suite, including but not limited to Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides; Analytics, Ads and Data Studio experience a plus.
  • Experience with Facebook and Google Ads (preferred).
  • Basic proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud programs.
  • Proficiency in tracking, measuring and analyzing applicable KPIs.

OBJECTIVES AND KEY RESULTS (OKRs)

This individual is responsible for meeting the following Objectives and Key Results during the first 90 days:

  • Perform situational assessments of the revenue-related landscapes in which SSS resides, and operationalize insights to drive both revenue and market share growth.
  • Create and maintain a backlog of revenue-focused marketing hypotheses to drive strategic revenue growth.
  • Prioritize key channels for testing and execute at least one test per channel.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The majority of the work required is performed in an office environment (a blend of virtual and office in light of COVID-19) with the flexibility to be fully remote. The team member must be able to effectively maneuver within the office area and perform essential functions necessary to perform the job duties and meet the OKRs described above. 


SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
